8 February 2023 (Press Release)

On February 8, Japan Platform (JPF; Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), an emergency humanitarian aid organization, has launched a response program to provide emergency assistance in Turkey and neighboring Syria, following the massive earthquake that struck southeastern Turkey on February 6 causing extensive damages. At this time, we have begun
accepting donations.

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck near the southeastern Turkish city of Gaziantep, close to the Syrian border, in the early morning of February 6 (local time). This was followed by another major magnitude 7.5 earthquake, and these earthquakes have caused extensive damages in southern Turkey and northern Syria. According to AFP, 5,894 people have been confirmed dead in Turkey and 1,932 in Syria, bringing the total death toll in the two countries to more than 7,800. The number of victims is expected to rise.*1 In addition, many buildings have collapsed, and while rescue efforts are underway, work is reportedly proving difficult. In some areas, snow is falling, and emergency shelter assistance is a pressing issue. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of affected people in
both Turkey and Syria could be up to 23 million.*2

JPF decided to launch an emergency initial assessment on the day of the earthquake on February 6, and member NGOs have already begun surveying the situations and needs in the affected areas. We would like to ask for your warm support in order to deliver prompt and effective assistance to the affected areas.
