JPF has been assisting the people affected by the magnitude-7 earthquake that struck the northern part of Lombok Island in August 2018. So far, JPF member NGOs have established an emergency community radio station that has provided restoration and reconstruction information to the residents, and they have also built temporary housing units. Currently, Peace Winds Japan (PWJ) is continuing to work on restoring the residents’ access to clean water.

JPF staff conducted field monitoring in the region and observed the progress made on the work towards improving water access. We also checked on the temporary housing that PWJ constructed as well as the water hygiene facilities there. We hope that the repair work will proceed smoothly in cooperation with the local people so that the community will have access to safe water.

Emergency Response to Indonesia Lombok Island Earthquake: Delivering safe water to villagers by rebuilding the water supply network

After the earthquake hit Lombok Island in Indonesia last August, Peace Winds Japan (PWJ), a JPF member NGO, has been working with a local partner organization to rebuild a water supply network in the Sembalun Subdistrict, located in the northeast area of Lombok Island, with funding from JPF.
PWJ has been supplying water using water trucks in the abovementioned region. However, as water trucks are not a sustainable solution, they decided to rebuild the water supply network itself. Their plan was to dig wells in villages located at a higher altitude compared to the village they were trying to assist, run a pipe from those wells to the target village, and install concrete tanks to store the water. They began building water tanks in April and deep wells in May.
We hope that the villagers will gain access to safe water through this program.

Emergency Response to Indonesia Lombok Island Earthquake: PWJ’s Water Access Restoration Project and IFRC’s Activities

As a JPF grant project, JPF member NGO Peace Winds Japan (PWJ) has been working with a local partner organization since the earthquake occurred last August to restore access to clean water in Sembalun county in the northeastern part of Lombok Island, Indonesia.

According to the May report from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the following Red Cross societies have partnered with local organizations and are providing funding for relief efforts: Japan, U.S., Australia, Italy, China, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and Switzerland. Also, the Red Crescent societies from Turkey and Qatar are contributing to the assistance activities as well.

Emergency Response to Indonesia Lombok Island Earthquake: JPF Member NGO Peace Winds Japan Continuing Water Assistance

25th April 2019 19:30

As a JPF grant project, JPF member NGO Peace Winds Japan (PWJ) has been working with a local partner organization since the earthquake occurred last August to restore access to clean water in Sembalun county in the northeastern part of Lombok Island, Indonesia.

On the afternoon of 17th March, additional earthquakes surpassing magnitude 5 struck Lombok Island. According to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), magnitude-5.8 and magnitude-5.2 earthquakes occurred one after another, causing great damages across a wide region on the island, including 6 casualties and 25 injuries in the north and over 800 homes partially or fully damaged in the east.

There are concerns that needs for water would increase due to water supply being cut off as a result of these recent earthquakes. We expect that this project, whose objective is to have more stable supply of safe drinking water for the community, will have even greater significance.

Emergency Response to Indonesia Lombok Island Earthquake: JPF Member NGO Radio FMYY Continuing Management Support of Radio Station

9th February 2019 22:00

As a JPF grant project, JPF member NGO Radio FMYY (FMYY) is continuing its assistance for starting and managing radio stations in the areas affected by the earthquake.

Since adequate information was not provided in enough volume from the local government and relief providers right after the disaster struck, chaos ensued as rumors spread. The earthquake that happened unexpectedly has left its impact in the region and various pieces of information are circulating. Given these circumstance, in order to help those affected by this disaster to access as accurate information as possible, this project helped start radio stations in the local community that can provide various information to the residents including the state of relief and damages in the region.

Emergency Response to Indonesia Lombok Island Earthquake: JPF Member NGO PWJ Building Temporary Housing

4th January 2019 22:00

As a JPF grant project, JPF member NGO Peace Winds Japan (PWJ) is working with a local partner organization to build temporary housing and toilet units in the Gangga District in northern Lombok Island. Earthquakes surpassing magnitude 6 struck the island on 29th July and 5th August last year, and over 400,000 people were affected. Many were forced to live in tents since immediately after the earthquakes. Temporary housing units that were completed in late October of last year were officially handed over at a hand-over ceremony to the community members affected by the earthquake, who were desperately waiting for their completion.

Situation

Determined to support the affected people of the earthquake of Lombok Island, Indonesia ~ more than 400 died, 27,000 houses destroyed ~

  • On Aug 5 in the night, a 7-magnitude tremor struck the eastern neighborhood islands of Bali, the West Nusa Tenggara province of East Lombok. The number of deaths by the earthquake and aftershock has reached 435, and more than 27,000 houses※1 has destroyed.
  • JPF started an emergency initial investigation※2 on August 6 with PWJ, the member NGO. The investigation was conducted in the urban region of Mataram and the neighborhoods where the massive disruption was recorded; information about the disaster situation was collected, communicating with the local government, the UN affiliates, several NGOs and the affected people.
  • Power and telecommunication networks are still severed in many areas and the bridges collapsed by the landslides are blocking access to the affected area. Therefore, the whole picture of the damage is not completely understood. In the isolated area, water, food, shelter and medical assistance is required. In the high altitude affected areas, the temperature falls intensively in the morning and at night, results in high demand for daily commodities such as blankets.
  • Some areas are still without sufficient support from the governments and international organizations, therefore JPF decided to provide support to fill the gap for the affected people in collaboration with the local government and the local NGOs. Currently, the member NGO PWJ is preparing to deliver goods such as daily essentials, water and sanitation aid for the affected people.
