Distribution of Material kits for Housing

Peace Winds Japan (PWJ), a JPF member NGO, has been supporting the distribution of emergency supplies to people attacked by the earthquake in Sid.
In May, they distributed house repair kits to a total of 600 households, mainly through pre-selected volunteers.

Peace Winds Japan (PWJ), a JPF member, is supporting the distribution of relief supplies to people attacked by the earthquake. In April, house repair kits were distributed to 276 households in Bouffard in Camp Perrin commune.

Good Neighbors Japan (GNJP), a JPF member NGO, distributed material kits for repairing houses damaged by earthquake in the communes of Maniche in Sid and Pestel in Grand'Anse.
On the day of distribution, with the cooperation of local authorities and volunteers, they were able to smoothly deliver the materials to the affected housholds.
Preparation for Distribution of Supplies for House Repairs

Peace Winds Japan (PWJ), a JPF member NGO, is preparing to deliver emergency relief supplies to people in the southern province of Haiti, who were severely damaged by a major earthquake last August.
According to meetings with the Haitian Housing and Public Building Construction Authority and the needs assessment that PWJ has been conducting since January, there is a great need for house repairs. With the distribution of supplies such as tin sheets and lumber necessary for repairs in mind, a list of candidate supplies is being compiled, estimates obtained, and distribution methods considered.
Continued support in consideration of natural disasters and the security situation

Since January, Haiti has been experiencing natural disasters such as a magnitude 5 earthquake and flooding caused by torrential rains, as well as unstable security conditions. JPF member NGOs Good Neighbors Japan (GNJP) and Peace Winds Japan (PWJ) have been making the necessary adjustments for assistance, such as consulting with local partner organizations for house repair, identifying needs for relief supplies, and coordinating logistics, while giving maximum consideration to such difficult circumstances.
Implementing Support Activities while Taking into Consideration the Security Situation

As the security situation remains unstable, especially in the capital, GNJP will proceed with assistance activities and make the necessary adjustments while paying close attention to safety.

On the other hand, there are concerns about the deteriorating security situation in Haiti, including the growing threat of gangs. We need to proceed with our support activities while paying careful attention to safety.

Both NGOs will carefully coordinate their assistance while paying close attention to safety and security.

On September 2, JPF decided to launch a program to provide emergency relief to those affected by the devastating earthquake in Haiti. Taking into consideration the relief needs identified in the initial survey by member NGO Peace Winds Japan (PWJ), JPF will provide shelter/NFI, food distribution, and other support in the affected areas of the southern prefecture.

Emergency Initial Survey Begins in Haiti Earthquake Affected Areas

On August 18, Peace Winds Japan (PWJ), a JPF member NGO with offices in the region, launched an emergency initial survey mainly in the southern prefecture of Haiti, which is considered to be severely damaged, in order to ascertain the extent of damage caused by the massive earthquake that struck southwest Haiti on August 14.

On September 2, Japan Platform (JPF; Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) decided to launch the emergency response to assist people affected by the earthquake in Haiti.
＜Overview＞
- On August 14, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Caribbean nation of Haiti, in the southwestern part of the country about 125 kilometers west of the capital city of Port-au-Prince. It caused widespread destruction of hospitals, schools, and other buildings, and on the same day, the Haitian government declared a state of emergency for one month. Two days later, Tropical Storm Grace hit the areas affected by the earthquake, worsening the damages even further. As of August 25, around 2,200 people have died, more than 12,000 injured, and 320 were still missing. 52,000 houses have been destroyed, 77,000 sustained damages, and the number of people in need of emergency assistance is reported to be 650,000*.
- On August 18, when the full extent of the damage was still unclear, Peace Winds Japan (PWJ), a JPF member NGO which has a local base, began an emergency initial assessment of the damages and support needs. They focused on the Sud (South) Department where the city of Les Cayes, with a particularly large population, is located and has been considered to have sustained severe damages.
- The government of Haiti and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) are currently coordinating assistance, and PWJ's initial assessment has confirmed that there is a lack of support, especially for shelter and NFIs (hygiene products, cooking utensils, clothes, etc.) for the evacuees. Considering those support needs, JPF decided to mobilize at this time, and our member NGOs will proceed to provide assistance such as shelter/NFI and food distribution in the affected areas of Sud Department.

To ensure the safety of staff on the ground, we will be consistently sharing security information with the Japanese Embassy and international organizations. Also, as the new coronavirus is spreading, we will implement relief activities while taking thorough measures to prevent the spread of infection.
