Food Provision and Home Repair Assistance for People Affected by Cyclone Amphan

As part of the JPF program, JPG member NGO Good Neighbors Japan (GNJP) is implementing a project to distribute essential supplies to the people affected by Cyclone Amphan.

GNJP is providing assistance to a remote and underserved area in the Patuakhali District of Bangladesh, which was severely affected by the cyclone. The food reserves were washed away, and many houses were damaged or destroyed, so GNJP distributed food and repaired houses as they were the biggest needs. More than 7,000 households received food such as rice, potatoes, beans, cooking oil, and salt, and more than 1,000 households received tin sheet metal to repair their houses.

Priority was given to the more vulnerable households, such as those that have family members with disabilities or elderly members as well as those making a living on a single income.

GNJP’s Food Provision Assistance

As part of the JPF program, JPG member NGO Good Neighbors Japan (GNJP) is implementing a project to distribute essential supplies to the people affected by Cyclone Amphan.

In Patuakhali District where GNJP is providing assistance, many lands were flooded, stockpiles of food were washed away, and houses were severely damaged by the cyclone.

With concerns about malnourishment and lack of safety and hygiene for people who have been affected by the cyclone who are living in unrepaired damaged houses or in shelters, GNJP has been distributing food and repairing houses for them. In the middle of this month, they distributed rice, potatoes, beans, cooking oil, salt and other essential food items to over 1,900 households. Priority is being given to those residents who are more vulnerable and have a lower standard of living.

JISP Repairing Damaged Houses

As part of the JPF program, JPF member NGO Japan International Support Program (JISP) is providing emergency relief for those affected by the cyclone in Satkhira District, Bangladesh.

Satkhira, Bangladesh, was severely damaged by Cyclone Amphan. Nof Bibi, a 65-year-old beneficiary of JISP's project, lives in this area with her son and grandchildren. Her husband, a forest worker, was killed in a tiger attack 30 years ago, and since then Nof has managed to live in a small house in the village. However, in May this year, their house was damaged by Cyclone Amphan.

JISP continues to provide assistance to cyclone-affected households by repairing houses and distributing food. Upon completion of repair work on her house, Nof remarked, "I am full of gratitude."

SN Supporting Vaccination of Livestock

As a JPF program, JPF member NGO Shaplaneer (SN) is implementing its emergency response to help residents affected by Cyclone Amphan rebuild their lives.

SN is helping vulnerable households in the hardest-hit areas of southern Bangladesh to rebuild their lives by providing food and safe water, vaccinating livestock, and providing simple housing materials.

Livestock are an important asset in rural Bangladesh, but there are concerns that they may be exposed to infectious diseases due to flooding. This is why SN held a vaccination camp. Announcements were made in the surrounding areas beginning two days prior to the camp, and 121 households vaccinated a total of 506 livestock and poultry, including cattle, goats, chickens and ducks.

PWJ's Assistance for Cyclone Amphan Relief

As a JPF program, JPF member NGO Peace Winds Japan (PWJ) is currently distributing relief supplies and promoting hygiene awareness for those affected by Cyclone Amphan.

The region where PWJ's project takes place has thriving fisheries and aquaculture industries, but the cyclone affected those industries as well as agriculture. People affected by the cyclone have been forced to live under difficult conditions due to the decrease in income sources and the cyclone's impact on food security, health, and hygiene, and are in need of assistance to rebuild their lives. PWJ distributes food, oral rehydration salts, tarpaulins, and fishing nets, and conducts awareness-raising activities in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases in environments where sanitary conditions have deteriorated post-disaster.

So far, PWJ has distributed food packs to more than 3,000 households and provided support by raising awareness of infection prevention to more than 3,000 households.

As part of JPF’s emergency response program, JPF member NGO Peace Winds Japan (PWJ) is distributing relief supplies and raising awareness about hygiene for the people affected by Cyclone Amphan.

The very powerful Cyclone Amphan made landfall on 20 May 2020. PWJ has been distributing emergency relief supplies and conducting infection prevention awareness activities. PWJ is distributing food packs and tarpaulins to vulnerable households to help them maintain a minimum standard of living and rebuild their lives. PWJ is also distributing fishing nets to households that were making a living through fishing or aquaculture but have lost their livelihoods due to the cyclone.

SN Implementing Relief in Bangladesh

As a JPF grant project, JPF member NGO Shaplaneer (SN) is implementing its emergency response to help residents affected by Cyclone Amphan rebuild their lives.

SN is preparing to work in southern Bangladesh - in Koyra Upazila, Khulna District, and Sarankhola Upazila, Bagerhat District - to secure safe drinking water and food, improve sanitation, provide temporary shelter and materials for houses, and assist in the rebuilding of livelihoods (including vaccination of livestock and distribution of seedlings). SN is working with the local government to share and coordinate information for the list of beneficiaries and to prepare to clean ponds that have been damaged with saltwater from the cyclone so that the water can be used for drinking and domestic use again. The staff all wear personal protective equipment and are ensuring physical and social distancing as they work.

SN’s Emergency Relief Efforts

As a JPF grant project, JPF member NGO Shaplaneer (SN) began its emergency response to help residents affected by Cyclone Amphan rebuild their lives.

In Bangladesh, Cyclone Amphan caused extensive damages and flooding to many homes and farmlands. SN is supporting areas especially hit hard in southern Bangladesh, in the Koyra Upazila in Khulna District and Sarankhola Upazila in Bagerhat District, through supporting residents secure food and safe water and through providing vaccinations for livestock and simple housing materials so that the vulnerable households are able to rebuild their lives on their own.

SN will implement COVID-19 prevention measures in all activities, including masks, thorough hand washing, and physical distancing (social distancing).

Mobilization Decided

On 18th June, Japan Platform (JPF) decided to launch the emergency response to assist people affected by Cyclone Amphan, which struck Bangladesh in late May.

Cyclone Amphan, a very powerful cyclone, made landfall in Bangladesh on 20th May 2020, causing serious damages in the country and affecting 10 million people. *1

In Khulna District, which had been hit hard by this storm, seawater flooded into residential areas from where the levee broke, resulting in damages to houses, farmlands, and other basic infrastructures. Additionally, while food and drinking water are still lacking, the government’s distribution of rice and water has only been a temporary measure.

Since COVID-19 has been rapidly spreading throughout Bangladesh, hygiene and sanitation challenges abound with concerns about the pandemic’s spread in evacuation shelters.

In response to these conditions in Bangladesh, JPF and its member NGOs will be implementing the following assistance to meet these needs: food distribution; water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH); and shelter.
