Japan Platform Providing Emergency Food Assistance to Middle Eastern & African Countries - Representing Japanese civic aid organizations and mobilizing the power of Japanese NGOs -
Japan Platform (JPF; Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), an emergency humanitarian aid organization, will provide emergency food assistance to countries in the Middle East and Africa with a ontribution of 1.08 billion yen from the Japanese government in response to the global food shortage aggravated by the Ukraine crisis.
Japanese government providing approximately 200 million US dollars in assistance in response to the food crisis
On July 5, the Government of Japan decided to provide a total of approximately US$200 million in assistance towards global food security. This decision was made in response to Prime Minister Kishida's announcement at the G7 Summit that Japan would contribute funds to address the global food crisis caused by the situation in Ukraine. At the G7 Summit, Prime Minister Kishida stated that the G7 has agreed to provide substantial assistance to countries suffering from soaring food prices, expressing Japan's intention to provide food aid to Middle Eastern and African countries. In the the Ministry of Foreign Affairs press release from July 5 entitled "Response to the Global Food Security affected by the Situation in Ukraine," it states that Japan will provide (1) food assistance and capacity building for countries facing food shortages, and (2) emergency food assistance as humanitarian aid to countries in the Middle Eastern and Africa, as well as support to promote grain exports from Ukraine, through bilateral assistance, UN agencies, and Japanese NGOs.
1.08 billion yen pledged to JPF as a representative of Japanese NGOs
Given that JPF has been providing food assistance to countries in the Middle East and Africa already, the government has decided to contribute approximately 10 million US dollars (or 1.08 billion yen) to JPF on behalf of Japanese NGOs to be used for emergency food assistance. At JPF, we have confirmed the urgent need for food assistance in the region due to soaring prices and stagnation of grain exports from Ukraine. With our member NGOs, we will maximize our efforts to make effective use of the funds entrusted to us and provide prompt and effective assistance to the people in distress. Emergency Food Assistance and Support to Promote Grain Exports from Ukraine
- United Nations World Food Program (WFP): $US68 million for emergency food and nutrition assistance
- United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA): US$5 million for emergency food assistance
- Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO): US$17 million for support for promotion of grain exports from Ukraine
- Japanese NGO (through Japan Platform): US$10 million for emergency food assistance
