Concern on the Situation in Myanmar Japanese

Since February 2021, the crisis in Myanmar has worsened (as of April 2021). Japan Platform (JPF) is deeply concerned about the detention and use of force by the military against Myanmar citizens and other people in Myanmar, who are demonstrating peacefully and unarmed, and the large number of casualties that include children and young people.

With our member NGOs, JPF launched an emergency response to the cyclone in Myanmar in May 2008 as our first humanitarian assistance program in the country for the people affected by Cyclone Nargis. Since then, we have provided relief to the people in Myanmar who have been affected by repeated floods. Starting in April 2013, we carried out a humanitarian assistance program for the displaced ethnic minority populations in Myanmar and Thailand where many refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) resided. We provided assistance to people who had to leave their homelands due to conflict so that they could return to their land of choice with peace of mind. Currently, since October 2017, JPF has been providing humanitarian assistance to the displaced people from Myanmar currently living in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, where more than 860,000 displaced persons* reside. We continue to provide humanitarian relief despite the coronavirus pandemic to ensure that people can live with good hygiene and sanitation and that their dignity is protected. We will continue to provide assistance that meets the needs of the local people and the conditions of the local communities.

JPF earnestly calls for an immediate end to the use of force and human rights abuses against Myanmar citizens and other people in Myanmar, and for the protection of the people's lives, freedoms, and safety. JPF also calls on world leaders, including the Japanese government, to continue and strengthen their humanitarian assistance to the more vulnerable populations in Myanmar.
