Japan Platform to launch humanitarian assistance for displaced people due to firefights in Mindanao island and begin calls for donations

On 15 June, Japan Platform (hereinafter referred to JPF; Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) decided to launch a programme for internally displaced persons (IDPs) due to ongoing armed conflict in South Philippines, and to fund an assistance project brought by a member NGO. In line with the decision, it is extensively calling for donations.

Since 23 May, fighting has broken out in Marawi city, Lanao Del Sur on Mindanao island in South Philippines, between armed force of Philippines and Maute fighters. Whole area of Mindanao island is under martial law declared by President Duterte. Over 290,000 residents have been displaced.※1 Up to 84% of the displaced are staying with relatives or friends, nearly 39,000 sought refuge in 50 evacuation centers located in Lanao del Norte.※1 100,000 children reportedly affected.※2 At least 150,000 displaced people are in need of food and WASH assistance.※3

Considering the situation described above, JPF decided that emergency assistance is necessary in order to save lives of displaced people, and to deliver them essential commodities as well as educational opportunity that are minimally required for human dignity.
Yuko Shibata, General Manager of Emergency Response Division, has stated the following: "JPF funded a project implemented by a member NGO that already have offices in Mindanao and 25 years' experiences in the area. We respond this crisis and begin assistance immediately and safely."

Japan Platform (JPF) was founded in 2000 as a new framework for coordinating Japanese emergency humanitarian aid.
